DREAMING, I AM NOT MYSELF, BUT OTHER PEOPLE… ![]()
While Dreaming,
I am inside the body of a complete stranger.
I am not myself,
but another person altogether.
Often such dreams occur when I’m traveling,
in motels and high rise hotels, camp tents,
hospital beds, new apartments, old houses.
The walls or winds talking?
Other people’s dreams I am having?
Other People’s Ghosts? Still lingering?
Until recently, I thought everyone had dreams like this-
brief dramas, glimpses, sometimes only snapshots,
into Other People’s lives.
I rouse myself from sleep to write while they remain vivid.
I write them down upon awakening, before clear thinking.
Before they wisp away.
Some confound me. Some haunt me.
Some of these Ghosts have ruled my life, as entire novels have unfolded,
volumes of stories, written as though I have lived them.
I share these strangers, hoping you might recognize them,
in the clues they left to me.
